We are pleased to announce the unveiling of the much-anticipated book “Rise of a Nation,” a journey through the Liberation War of Bangladesh, as depicted through captivating photographs by Magnum photographer Raghu Rai. Presented by the Durjoy Bangladesh Foundation (DBF) and the Raghu Rai Foundation, this publication is a collaborative effort aimed at becoming an invaluable archival treasure for future generations, preserving the memory of this historical event. This extraordinary book takes readers on a poignant journey through the heart of Bangladesh’s Liberation War, capturing its essence through the lens of photographer Raghu Rai.

On May 10th, 2024, the Durjoy Bangladesh Foundation (DBF), in collaboration with the Raghu Rai Foundation, launched the book “Rise of a Nation’ . The book is a photographic marvel, showcasing unpublished and rare photographs from Raghu Rai’s 1971 series on the War of Liberation.

Rai’s evocative photographs, taken in and around the Sharanarthi Shibir (refugee camp), vividly capture the essence of the period. During the war, the photojournalist traversed alongside the Muktibahini and the Indian forces, skillfully capturing the ebb and flow of the conflict and the profound human suffering it entailed.

GLIMPSES FROM THE BOOK LAUNCH CEREMONY

“Covering a war was a profoundly unique experience. Since August 1971, I embarked on numerous trips to photograph the influx of refugees arriving in India. I bore witness to the stark realities of their existence, marked by immense suffering and profound pain.”

At the book launch, renowned actor and theatre director Ramendu Majumdar graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Notable figures such as freedom fighter and film director Nasiruddin Yousuff Bacchu, esteemed advisory board members Ms. Rubana Huq and freedom fighter Mr. Anjan Chowdhury, and Barrister Amir-Ul Islam honored the event as Special Guests. The event was presided over by Mr. Durjoy Rahman, the founder of Durjoy Bangladesh Foundation (DBF). The presence of Raghu Rai, the distinguished photographer himself, heightened the significance of the book’s launch, as he shared invaluable stories and personal experiences from the time of the Liberation War.
